Automotive Air Conditioning Compressor System
In the last 70 years our cars ac system has undergone many changes. Electrical components have been added to monitor and control the performance of the a/c system and with it has brought different operational considerations. The correct ac system oil type, oil amount, and oil viscosity is imperative to reach desired operating temperatures and system operating pressures. The refrigerant flow starts at the compressor to the condenser to the accumulator to the expansion device to the evaporator and back to the compressor. Read on to learn more about your car’s a/c system parts and how they function. CLICK HERE FOR VIDEO
Auto A/C Compressor
Although often deemed the issue at hand, your auto ac compressor is merely a pump. Providing the overall system with a high-pressure source to pump and low-pressure suction source to maintain the flow of refrigerant.
Auto A/C Accumulator
The purpose of an accumulator is the store excess liquid refrigerant and to absorb moisture from the system. Extreme damage can be caused when liquid refrigerant is introduced to an ac system and the ac accumulator performs the task of stopping the action. It is recommended to replace this ac system filter whenever the ac system has been opened to replace other parts.
Auto A/C Expansion Device
Your car could be equipped with about 3 main types of expansion devices. Orifice Tube. Thermal Expansion Valve, or Thermal Expansion Block Valve. Orifice tubes will typically be found near the inlet of the evaporator core or the liquid line between the evaporator and ac condenser. Expansion valves and block valves are another effective way to meter refrigerant by monitoring both temperature and pressure. Expansion valves and block valves are typically found on the evaporator core or firewall.
Auto A/C Condenser
The air conditioning condenser works much like a radiator does for your car’s cooling system. A condenser actually condenses the refrigerant from a gas state to a high pressure liquid state. Generally the condenser will look much like a radiator with open fins to allow air flow for the cooling of ac refrigerant. Commonly with Ford and select other ac systems the overheating of the ac compressor can cause debris to become stuck in the lines of the condenser. Replacement of the condenser is recommended when this occurs.
Auto A/C Evaporator Core
Your car’s ac evaporator core is located inside of the vehicle and is the area in which the cooling occurs. As refrigerant enters the evaporator as a low pressure liquid the that has been metered by the expansion device to ensure freezing doesn’t occur. Your car’s blower motor pushes the air through the cooled evaporator unit and through the vents.
Auto A/C Pressure Switches
In the advancing world of automotive computer controlled components, your car’s air conditioning system has not been overlooked. There are array of Low pressure, High pressure, Compressor Cut Off, and Cooling fan Temperature and Speed sensors and switches that control your ac system. When diagnosed correctly these switches can save the system from future warranty work or eliminate the original repair entirely.
APE Auto Parts warrants all automotive air conditioning parts to be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of 1 year from the date purchased. This warranty only applies to compressors when proper installation is met by replacing the accumulator, expansion device, flushing the system of all debris, and using the proper type and amount of system oil. This warranty does not cover any expenses incurred in the removal and / or reinstallation of the auto part. Specifically, this warranty does not cover any expenses for FREON, OTHER PARTS not purchased from APE Auto Parts, or LABOR. This warranty is offered only to the original purchaser of the compressor. This warranty does not apply, and will be voided, if the auto part sold has been damaged by abuse, misuse, accident, neglect, or alteration. If the auto part sold should prove defective in material or workmanship within the warranty period, call our customer service center at 888-624-4005 to obtain a Sales Return Authorization number, which should be included with any and all returns. APE Auto Parts will, at its option, replace or repair the compressor free of charge and return it to you postage prepaid. Sales Return Authorization numbers expire after 60 days.

Accordingly, limitations as to these matters contained herein may not apply to you.
Warranty Summary
APE Auto Parts warranties its compressors for 365 days from the original date of purchase. For the warranty to be valid please note the following:
1) The system MUST be flushed with a no residue liquid flush or approved flushing system (e.g., live flush system), then blown out with compressed air.
2) The accumulator or filter/drier MUST be replaced.
3) If the system uses an orifice filter, the filter MUST be replaced. (If the system uses an expansion valve or block, it must be clean and in good repair or replaced with new).
4) The system MUST be vacuumed/evacuated for at least 30 minutes.
5) A licensed technician MUST install the refrigerant to properly gauged pressure levels.
6) In certain instances with vehicles using FS10/FX15 compressors that have locked down, the condenser should be replaced.
7) All related replacement parts purchased with the compressor through APE Auto Parts are warranted for replacement for 12 months. (Parts purchased from other suppliers are NOT covered by this replacement warranty). This EXCLUDES FREON.
8) For parts not purchased though APE Auto Parts, proof of purchase and/or installation dated on or before the date of service is required.
9) Labor for installation or reinstallation is NOT covered under warranty.
10) It is highly recommended that licensed technicians at reputable repair shops perform all installations.
Consider
A compressor is a motor, like any motor the oil reservoir must be clean and contain oil. The system (condenser, lines, etc....) is the oil reservoir. It all must be clean. You must flush the lines and condenser with a liquid flush. We only recommend using a liquid flush, followed by compressed air. Use of Varsol to clean the condenser and all hoses is acceptable. It should be followed with a "no residue" solvent such as Chlorothane or Trichlorothane. Of course, follow this with compressed air.
Procedure
1) Remove Freon and remove the old compressor. Disconnect the high pressure line (the small line) at the evaporator (for now leave the orifice tube / expansion valve in place).
2) IMPORTANT: The high pressure lines and condenser will most likely be dirty. Flush the lines and the condenser with the recommended liquid flush followed with compressed air. It's easy. Pour cleaner, about 1/2 quart, in the high pressure line where it attached to the compressor. Let it flow down into the condenser and then blow it out with plenty of air. Once fluid and trash quit coming out, repeat with additional cleaner and air. Do this until you get clean fluid to exit the lines.
3) In most cases the orifice screen or drier filter will have kept the evaporator free from debris. If the evaporator is dirty it must be cleaned. Use only a "no residue" solvent in the evaporator as these solvents tend to evaporate quickly. Extra care is necessary to blow all the solvent from the evaporator as often the tubes are not at the lowest point of the core. If the evaporator is flushed you should allow additional time with the vacuum pump on the system in order to "boil out" all solvent. No solvent can be left in the system.
4) Always, WITH NO EXCEPTION, install a new accumulator or drier, and orifice tube (certain vehicles require a new "liquid line" which contains the orifice tube). It is acceptable to use the old expansion valve, on vehicles so equipped, if it is clean and working. Now, with everything clean, install the compressor.
5) Vacuum and service the system (Vacuum the system a minimum of 30 minutes).
** Our compressors are shipped with NO OIL. Add the appropriate amount of oil to the system based on the manufacturers specifications prior to the refrigerant charge.
Note: We make every effort to supply all compressors with the appropriate electrical connections. However, it is possible that the connector on our compressor could be different that your application. If this is the case, you may cut the wire in order to use your connection WITHOUT affecting your warranty
Note: If switches and/or a line manifold are necessary, use these from the old unit.

KNOW YOUR PRESSURES. The first question we ask any customer that's having issues with their auto air conditioning system is, "What are the system pressures?". There is much to be learned about the components operations and replacement needs once the high side pressure and low side pressures have been identified. Before spending money on an expensive auto repair, have your installer explain to you the current ac system operating pressures.
When Suction side pressures are below 20psi.
Your AC System may be low on refrigerant (R134a or R12).
Leaks can occur at any joining of system components including the components themselves.
When Discharge side pressures are higher than 320 psi.
You may have a restriction in your system.
The AC Expansion Valve may be malfunctioning.
Your system my require a complete system flush and the replacment of oil and accumulator.
